Today several different parties are involved in providing rail transport, so the sector needs to simplify interaction between actors and create common cost-effective solutions. This must be achieved at the lowest possible cost while at the same time meeting sustainability requirements.
Labelling railway wagons – RFID in Rail
The Swedish Transport Administration is at the leading edge of the application of RFID in rail and is building an infrastructure to derive benefit from the technology. Currently there are about 200 readers installed throughout Sweden and similar developments are taking place in many other European countries.
Everything takes place automatically with RFID readers that read a wagon’s status which can even be done when the train is travelling at high speed. For the status of a wagon to be read it must carry RFID tags with information about its identity. There needs to be a tag on each side of the wagon.
Train operators are responsible for labelling their locomotives and wagons.
