GS1’s standards enable the grocery sector to identify, capture and share product information throughout the value chain.

In an environment that is increasingly characterised by the consumer’s needs and wishes, GS1’s standards are the foundation you need in order to succeed.

There is a reason why we are the most widely used retail sector standard in the world. Over the years we have helped thousands of companies in grocery retail to capture and share accurate information on their products – all the way to the consumer. Through this, we have helped them improve goods supply, stock management and on-shelf availability.

The grocery sector was the pioneer for the introduction of barcodes. Already at the end of the 1970s leading players in the grocery sector started the European barcode organisation, EAN. The foundation was laid for the start of barcode use in the grocery sector in Europe.

GS1 standards are established in the sector

The grocery sector has used GS1’s standards for a long time and uses in principle all parts.

Articles and packages are numbered with GS1 Trade Item Numbers (GTIN), pallets with Serial Shipping Container Codes (SSCC) and GS1 Location Numbers (GLN) are used for identification of delivery points and invoicing addresses. Packages and pallets are labelled with GS1 barcodes.

Based on GS1’s standard for Trade Item Information, suppliers provide accurate information on an item’s dimensions, weight, item number, shelf life, and so on. Trade Item Information is sent from supplier to customer using GS1 Sweden’s business service Validoo. Many business transactions such as orders, despatch advices and invoices, are sent electronically based on GS1’s business processes, ESAP.
