GS1 barcodes enable information to be transferred quickly and reliably from things to computers. They are used throughout the world to label consumer packages, cases and pallets.

Labelling consumer packages

Items that cross the point of sale in a retail store are labelled with a barcode so that the item number can be quickly and easily scanned. Using the article number, the price and item name are fetched from the store’s item database for printing on the till-roll. The article number is also a prerequisite for ensuring reliable sale statistics for use in purchasing decisions, profitability follow-up and shelf space allocation.

Many of the national GS1 organisations around the world are working very actively in different retail sectors. There are lots of ideas to share and things to learn from our sister organisations.
