As companies increasingly trade electronically, so the need to effectively identify the parties involved increases.
Identifying parties
When trading electronically and marking goods with barcodes, GLN's are used to identify the parties involved, for example buyer, seller, and place of delivery. In the electronic business transactions sent between the partners full address information is omitted and the parties' GLNs are used instead. This ensures, amongst other things, that the goods and invoices get to the right place. Similarly, parties can be bar-coded on a shipping label.
