Efficiency and security

More and more companies see the advantages of transmitting information using barcodes. Things can be done faster and the chance of a number being wrong is reduced when it is read with a scanner rather than being input manually. In an automated warehouse, barcodes are a prerequisite for the successful flow of goods and information. A fixed scanner reads pallets on their way in and out so that all information about the pallet is automatically transferred to the warehouse management system.

A barcode often contains information which acts as a link to a database, which makes it more essential that the barcode must be readable. The barcode can be a link to an electronic document, such as a dispatch advice. When barcodes work, everybody involved in the flow of goods and information shares the same data.

There are requirements that, for example, pharmaceuticals and food shall be traceable back to the manufacturer. Traceability can be achieved using an item number and batch number together with a unique SSCC. When this information is bar-coded, the information transferred is more reliable since the numbers do not have to be input manually.

What happens if a barcode cannot be read?

As the use of barcodes increases, so does the requirement that they must be readable. An unreadable barcode is inefficient and increases costs.

In the warehouse an unreadable barcode can lead to increased costs, longer lead times and reduced data quality

When a barcode cannot be read, the information it contains must be input manually to the warehouse management system. This takes time and the flow in the warehouse is restricted. In addition, there is an increased risk of error. In order for the pallet with the unreadable barcode to be processed through the warehouse, the recipient usually re-labels it thus introducing the risk of loss of traceability.

In the store an unreadable barcode can lead to reduced sales and longer queues

There is a risk that the consumer who is self scanning will choose another brand if the barcode is unreadable. At the checkout it takes longer to input and article number manually than to read a barcode, which can lead to longer queues of customers. When the article number is manually input the risk of error also increases so that the consumer is incorrectly charged and sales statistics are inaccurate.

At the hospital an unreadable barcode can affect patient safety

When the barcode on, for example, a pharmaceutical package intended for a given patient cannot be read the information must be input manually to the Journal system. A manual process increases the risk of erroneous input which reduces safety for the patient and leads to inefficiencies.
