This information is for companies who want to number and barcode items with variable weight, for example meat, fish, cheese, fruit and vegetables.
How to get going
If you need to number and barcode items with variable weight you must order both a GS1 Company Prefix and a GS1 Variable Weight Prefix from GS1 Sweden.
A GS1 Company Prefix is used to create unique GS1 identifiers such as GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) and GLN (Global Location Number).
GS1 identifiers can be encoded in barcodes such as EAN-13, GS1-128 or ITF-14 and subsequently read by a scanner.
A GS1 Variable Weight Prefix is used to create variable weight numbers. Variable weight numbers are used only to number consumer units with variable weight.
